Irish (Kerry): Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Criomhthainn ‘son of Criomhthann’ an old personal name meaning ‘fox’. The name was borne by several early kings of Munster. Criomhthann was also the name of an early Christian saint and is said to have been Saint Columba's original first name. Irish (Tyrone): possibly an Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Críocháin or Mac Créacháin used as a variant of Ó Críocháin at Ardstraw Tyrone.
