Spanish: metonymic occupational name for someone who had a mace as a symbol of office or who carried one in ceremonial possessions, from Spanish maza ‘mace’ (Late Latin mattea, probably of Germanic origin). In some cases it may have been used as a metonymic occupational name for a soldier who used a mace in its original function as a weapon. Polish: nickname derived from mazac ‘to smear’, ‘sully’, ‘rub out’. The exact meaning of the nickname is unclear. Compare Maziarz.
