French and Romanian (Maran): topographic name from an adjective derived from Latin marinus ‘marine’, ‘maritime’. Alternatively, it is said by some authorities to be an altered form of the element maren(c), which occurs in the word cormoran ‘cormorant’, from Latin corvus marinus ‘sea raven’.
