German (Löbe): variant of Löwe ‘lion’ (see Lowe ). German: metonymic occupational name for a tanner from Middle High German ‘tanning bark’. German: possibly a shortened form of Lobisser an agent derivative of Middle High German labese ‘sorrel (Rumex acetosa)’. It is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ) and may alternatively be of Slovenian origin (see 4 below). Slovenian: nickname from a derivative of loba ‘abscess without the apex’.
