Norwegian: habitational name from any of numerous farmsteads in Trøndelag, named with the definite plural form of Li 4. Chinese : the main source of this surname is Lian Cheng, a senior minister for the state of Qi, located in present-day Shandong province. Chinese : the name Lian is found in traditional accounts as long as 4500 years ago, part of the name of a descendant of the legendary emperors Huang Di and Zhuan Xu. Later descendants adopted Lian as their surname.
