Finnish: ornamental name from lampi ‘pond’ (compare Lampi ) + the surname suffix -nen adopted in the late 19th century primarily by Finns without surnames in central and southern Finland (compare Virtanen ). In eastern Finland (Savonia) the name has been in a few cases recorded since the 18th century as a habitational name from farms so named and as such it was also adopted in northern and central Finland and in Ostrobothnia in the 19th century.
