Kurucz Name Meaning
Hungarian: from kuruc (from German Kreuz ‘cross’), a term denoting the army in general or an individual soldier of the Hungarian anti-Habsburg resistance, a Magyar freedom fighter. This was originally a derogative nickname given by the Austrians to the Hungarian soldiers of Imre Thököly at the end of the 17th century and the anti-Habsburg rebels of Ferenc Rákóczi at the beginning of the 18th century.
