Finnish: habitational name from farms so named or ornamental name from koski ‘rapids’. Adopted as a surname widely in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in western and southern Finland (compare Laine ). In the US this is sometimes a shortened form of other Finnish surnames formed with this element e.g. Kalliokoski Ylikoski. Polish: habitational name from any of several places called Koski named with kos ‘blackbird’. In the US this may also be a shortened (and shortened) form of some longer surname of Polish origin ending in -ko(w)ski or beginning with Ko- and ending in -ski.
