German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from Middle High German korb German Korb ‘basket’ applied as a metonymic occupational name for a basketmaker or for a peddler who carried his wares around in a basket or as a topographic or habitational name referring to a house distinguished by the sign of a basket. In Bavaria it also denoted the occupant of a laborer's cottage built with wattle (i.e. interwoven twigs) and daub.
