Kapitan Name Meaning
German, Polish, and Hungarian (Kapitán(y)): status name from a word meaning ‘captain’ (Late Latin capitaneus ‘chief’, ‘principal’ from caput ‘head’). This title was used in various senses, for example of the master of a ship and as an official rank in the army. This may also be a reduced form of Greek Kapetanos or of its numerous patronymic and other derivatives (Kapetanakis, Kapetanopoulos, Kapetanoglou, Kapetanellis, etc.). As a Greek surname, it derives from Italian (Venetian) capitano.
