Dutch and German: metonymic occupational name for a chicken farmer or poultry merchant from hoen ‘hen chicken grouse’ or a habitational name from a so named house with the image of such a bird depicted on a sign or an ornamental stone. Dutch and German: from the ancient Germanic personal name Huno (from hūn ‘bear cub’). German: variant of Höhn (see Hoehn ). Norwegian: habitational name from either of two farmsteads named Hon from Old Norse hundr ‘dog’ or from Hóvin a compound of hór ‘high’ + vin ‘meadow’.
