Muslim (mainly Bangladesh and India): from the Arabic personal name Ḥasan ‘good handsome’. Hasan (c. 625–669) and his brother Husain were sons of the caliph ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (see Ali ) and through their mother Fatima grandsons of the prophet Muhammad. Shiite Muslims regard Hasan and his brother Husain as the true successors of Muhammad. The name is popular among Sunni Muslims as well as Shiites. See also Hassanein compare Hassan . Jewish: variant of Hazan . Croatian: from the Turkish Muslim personal name Hasan of Arabic origin (see 1 above). This surname originated as a nickname during the Turkish occupation of the Balkans. Albanian: from the Muslim personal name Hasan (see 1 above). In North America this surname is probably also an altered form of the much more common Albanian variant Hasani .
