Swiss German: probably a variant of Harig. Slovenian: perhaps a derivative of the personal name Zaharija (see Zacharias). Indian (southern states): Hindu name, from Sanskrit hari ‘one who takes away (evil)’, an epithet of the god Vishnu. It is only found as a male given name in India, but has come to be used as a surname in the U.S. among South Indians.
