Finnish: topographic name from halla ‘frost’, by extension ‘fallow field’. This name is found mainly in northern Finland (Ostrobothnia and Kainuu). It is also found as an ornamental name, adopted by Finns with Swedish names during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Finnish: from an old personal name of Germanic origin. Variant of German Halle (see Hall), found in France, Austria, Bohemia, and elsewhere.
