Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mag Raighne ‘son of Raighne’, a pet form of Raghnall. MacLysaght describes this as a north Ulster name which is sometimes changed to Grant. Possibly a respelling of Swiss German Gräni, of unexplained origin.
