Garrigues Name Meaning
Southern French: from Old Provençal garrique ‘grove of holm oaks or kermes oaks’; a topographic name for someone who lived by such a grove, or a habitational name from any of various places named with this word, such as Les Garrigues in Tarn-et-Garonne and Vaucluse. After the revocation of the edict of Nantes (1685), a French family from Languedoc with this name migrated to Prussia, and thence to England, where it is found in the form Garrick, and America, where the surname is found in a profusion of forms. In Berlin it also appears in the form Jar(r)iges.
