Polish, Czech (Moravian) and Slovak: from the personal name Gallus, from Latin Gallus or Gaulus (see Gall 2). Hungarian: from a pet form of Gál (see Gal). Italian: possibly a nickname from a derivative of gallo ‘rooster’; alternatively it could be from medieval Latin gadda ‘oak’, or perhaps a variant of Calla. Muslim: variant of Kalla.
