South German and Swiss German: from Fastnacht ‘Shrovetide carnival’, ‘Shrove Tuesday’ (literally ‘fast eve’); probably, like Fasching, it was a nickname for a lively, exuberant person or someone born between Christmas and Lent, in particular on Shrove Tuesday.
