North German: occupational name for a steward or head servant, Middle Low German drotsete (a cognate of Middle High German truhsæze). The term derives from Old High German truht ‘body of vassals’ (later servants) + sizzen ‘to sit’ (i.e. preside). The term was also used as a title in various different contexts.
