Italian: from the personal name Cipriano, from Latin Cyprianus, originally an ethnic name for an inhabitant of Cyprus. The name was borne by a bishop of Carthage who was martyred in 258, and by another saint, probably legendary, whose cult was suppressed by the Holy See in 1969.
