Catalan (Carbó): from carbó ‘coal’, ‘jet black’, probably applied as a topographic name for someone who lived by a coal outcrop, an occupational name for someone who extracted or sold coal, or a nickname for someone with exceptionally dark eyes or hair. Southern Italian (Sicily): possibly a topographic name from Sicilian carbu ‘hollow in a tree’.
