German: habitational name from a place near the Czech border named Buchbach, pronounced and also recorded as Buchba, from a variant of which the surname arose. German: habitational name from a place named Buchte in Brandenburg. In eastern Germany, possibly from the Sorbian personal name Buchta, ultimately a derivative of Boguslav. Czech, Slovak, Polish, and eastern German: from buchta ‘baked yeast dumpling’ (see Buchtel 2). Czech: possibly from a derivative of Budislav or some other personal name formed with budi- ‘to awaken or inspire’.
