Dutch and North German: ornamental or occupational name from an agent derivative of Dutch and Middle Low German blom ‘flower’ (see Bloem). In the Lower Rhine area and Westphalia the vowel cluster -oe- is not pronounced with an umlaut; instead, the -e- indicates a lengthening of the vowel.
