Bhuiyan Name Meaning
Bangladeshi: from Bengali bhuyyan ‘landlord’, ‘chieftain’. Bearers of this surname claim descent from one of the twelve chieftains (nine Muslims and three Hindus), who ruled the Sultanate of Bengal (1336–1576). They frequently declared their independence from the imperial rule of the Mughals. The chieftain Isa Khan of Sonargaon defeated the Mughals in a naval blockade in September 1584, but in the end the sultanate was brought under Mughal administration.
