Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, and Croatian (northern Croatia; also from the Dalmatian island of Korcula): topographic name from Czech bez Slovak baza ‘elder’ or ‘lilac’, Slovenian and northern Croatian dialect beza, dialect form of bazga ‘elder’. Slovenian (Bežek): perhaps a medieval nickname for a refugee, from an agent noun based on bežati ‘to flee’.
