Altered spelling of Swiss German Bürki, from a pet form of the personal name Burkhard (see Burkhart). Dutch: variant of Berk. Slovenian: unexplained. Jewish (Ashkenazic): from the Yiddish personal name Berke, a pet form of Ber.
