Swedish: ornamental compound probably influenced by German formations of bark ‘bark’ + man ‘man’. Dutch: perhaps a topographic or habitational name referring to a house named De Barck distinguished by the image of a ‘bark’ i.e. ship (as for example a Jan Barckman who lived in such a house in Amsterdam in 1601); otherwise perhaps a variant of Berkman a topographic name with a birch as the locative object.
