Italian: southern form of a personal name of Germanic origin, found in the north in the forms Uggeri and Oggeri. These names were evidently adaptations of Old French Og(i)er, from the Germanic personal name Adalgari, composed of the elements audha- ‘wealth’, ‘power’ + gaira-, from gaiza ‘lance’.
