Dutch (Limburg) and Walloon (of Dutch origin) (Van Aubel): habitational name from the town of Aubel in the province of Liège in Wallonia (Belgium). Americanized form of Slovenian Avbelj and Aubelj of German origin (see 1 and 2 above). The surname in the form Aubel is found in Slovenia too where it is rare.
