German: topographic name for someone who lived on a river island or on a riverbank or on a patch of dry land in a fen all of which were senses of the Middle High German term wert werder. North German: occupational name for an innkeeper from Middle Low German wert; alternatively a nickname with the meaning ‘husband master of the house’. German: habitational name from any of the places called Werd Werth and Wörth. Jewish (Ashkenazic): artificial name from German Wert ‘value’.
