South German: occupational name for a maker of glue or bird lime from an agent derivative of Middle High German slīm ‘glue bird lime’. German: altered form of Schleiner which may be of the same origin as Schlein and thus a variant of 1 above or a nickname derived from obsolete Bavarian schläunen ‘to get a move on with something’. This is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ).
