Czech: nickname from the past participle of the old or dialect word roubat ‘to hew to cut down (a tree)’ applied to someone who worked with an axe or perhaps to a carpenter. Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from a pet form of Reuben or possibly an artificial name from Russian rubl ‘rouble’ the Russian unit of currency.
