Rampton Family History
Rampton Name Meaning
English (Hampshire and Surrey): habitational name apparently from either of the two parishes called Rampton (Cambridgeshire and Nottinghamshire). The Cambridgeshire placename is recorded as Ramtona in 1086 and derives from Old English ramm ‘ram’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’. The Nottinghamshire placename recorded as Rametone in 1086 probably has the same origin as the Cambridgeshire placename but since it is also recorded as Raveneston' in 1194 the first element may be Old English hræfn ‘raven’ or the Old Norse personal name Hrafn. However the modern surname is concentrated in Hampshire and Surrey suggesting perhaps that another unidentified source could be involved.
