French:: from Old French maillot ‘big mallet’ used as a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked with such an implement e.g. a smith and perhaps also as a nickname for a fearsome warrior (see English Mallett ). This is the usual form of the surname in France (it is however most frequent in Réunion) while in North America it is normally spelled Mailhot . possibly also a habitational name from (Le) Maillot the name of several places in various parts of France.
