Hungarian: nickname for a towering person or someone of high standing from the vocabulary word magas ‘tall’. Croatian (Magaš): from a regional vernacular form of the Latin personal name Hermagoras (from the name of the Greek god Hermēs) which was borne by a minor early Christian saint from ancient Moesia. In part the name may also be of Hungarian origin (see 1 above). Polish: unexplained. Slovak (Magaš): probably of Hungarian origin (see 1 above). The surname Magaš is very rare in Slovakia found only in the Trenčín region.
