English (Gloucestershire and Somerset): topographic name from Middle English lip-yate ‘leap gate’ a term denoting a low gate in a fence which is low enough to be leaped over by deer while high enough to keep sheep from straying. Alternatively the surname may come from any of several places called with this word notably Lypiate in Somerset and Lypiatt in Gloucestershire.
