English: alternatively from Anglo-Norman French cuissier quisser denoting a maker of armor for the thighs (from Old French cuisse ‘thigh’) a term that also came to be used for a maker of hose (garments for men's buttocks and legs). German: from the ancient Germanic personal name Gisher composed of the elements gis (from gīsil ‘pledge hostage noble offspring’; see Giesel ) + heri ‘army’.
