BED4343, you may be seeing “potential ancestors” that Ancestry is suggesting could be yours as well because Ancestry is seeing the relationship between you and your half-sister. You can stop seeing these by changing the selection under the Filters option. The system won't save the setting, however, so the next time you open ThruLines again you'll see them all again.

Edited. The Filters option is on the top left when you open the ThruLines page.

I understand that is the way it is supposed to work, but mine doesn't seem to be pulling from the correct tree. I have different trees for my half sister and myself. There are some common relatives, so there are some of the same people in both trees, including the two of us. Although I have my DNA test linked to my family tree, the Thrulines are showing up with DNA matches with relatives from her tree that are not in mine. If those people are not in my tree, why are they appearing in the Thrulines connections? No connections are showing up for my ancestors who are in my tree that we don't have in common even though there are DNA matches.

Thrulines are always for the tree to which you have your DNA linked. So if you have Thrulines for the wrong tree, then you also have your DNA linked to the wrong tree. Go to your DNA page, click settings and then link the DNA to the correct tree. It may take a few days to update.

Settings can cause a problem even when they didn't previously. This is a dynamic system, not a static one.

1) Check the parental relationships to ensure that they say, biological.
Tips if you are comparing scenarios

1) A DNA kit can only be linked to one tree. If you have separate trees, the DNA isn't connecting to all of them, only the one you selected to link it to.

2) The relationship settings must be correct. If a possible parent is set to 'unknown' relationship, the analysis may not work. support.ancestry.com/s/article/Fixing-Relationships-in-Trees

3) Contact Support to check your settings.

ThruLines

Hi everyone. I am wondering if anyone has a clue has to how to remove names from ThruLines. Initially there were 6 people who connected my 2x great grandfather to a family that were Dutch but living in Guyana in the mid 1700s to early 1800s. Our family have been told we are connected but there is ZERO PROOF. Part of the problem is My 2x gr grandfather did not know his parents names as he was born in Guyana in 1829 and shipped to England in 1835 supposedly for his education which he never received. Family story is the money was stolen by the designated guardian! Likely a story but one keeps it on the mind. That said when he married his first wife in 1857 he used Richard as father's name then his wife died shortly after the birth of their 2nd son Thomas who was only about 5 when his mother died he remarried, put Thomas down as his father!!! He went on to have nearly a dozen more children, but now people are using Thomas as his father's name and it is NOT. If indeed he is connected to the family that is on ThruLines his father's name would never be Thomas as they continued the Dutch male names in this line. I wrote to all of them several times and 4 were kind enough to delete the name Thomas as father and remove the remaining names, but TWO have not even replied. Therefore I have 2 generations of this Dutch family as my 4th and 5th grandparents and they are not (at this point in time) and it is most annoying. Could Ancestry not allow us the option to remove these people?? Sorry had to vent a bit about this. Cheers, Mrs. Davies.

Following a phone call a few days later to remind them that they had not responded to me, I have now got an email to tell me to fill in all names and dates of birth and death. I have not removed any from when it worked before so I don't see why (if, as they tell me they have not made any changes to their system) this should work now. They also inform me that I have to wait about 3 days before I will be able to see if this works. They also helpfully included a help line phone number which is not valid for my area.

i just lost all my Thrulines last night! I had been really building my tree. I loved how every time I confirmed a potential Mother or Father I would get a message on the screen that read "Good Job"! Boy was I proud of my budding and flourishing
branches. I happened to notice at some point that I had (and still have until I fix them all) lots of duplicates. I thought it was because I was switching from laptop to my iPhone sometimes. First thing I did was make my tree private because I was somewhat embarrassed. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Knowledge is power.

It's ThruLines not Truelines. Now are all three brothers in your tree and all the links correct down to you?

If all lines are correct, go to the ThruLines page that lists all ancestors and they should be on that page. You would then check each brother independently. I have checked this with my husband's tree. However, I am not sure that would happen if you clicked on the brothers' father and looked at that ThruLine.

Same thing happened to me. My Mother and her side of the family disappeared from Thrulines. When I went to my profile it showed my Father as Biological parent and my Mother (who was named) as Unknown. When I went to her profile and edit relationships as Valerie suggested I was listed as Unknown but my siblings were still Biological. I changed me to Biological and it instantly connected her back into Thrulines.

Thrulines are only working on my father's side of the family. My DNA test is linked to my tree, but for some reason my mother's ancestors are not showing up on my Thrulines. Is anyone else having issues with Thrulines?

Update: somehow my mother's relationship to me got changed. I fixed it by going to her profile, choosing edit, then edit relationship, and choosing biological on the pull down menu. After waiting 24 hours for the Thrulines update, her ancestors are now back on Thrulines.

Re: Thrulines

Maybe because it isn't accurate much farther back? I found this "So, past about 5 generations, it's not that we get tinier and tinier chunks of DNA from ancestors at each subsequent generation, it's that we either do or don't get the chunk(s) our parent has for a particular ancestor. At about the 6th generation back, we get to a situation where some ancestors are no longer in our DNA at all in detectable amounts. Simulations show that our DNA has room to represent about 128-256 ancestors at any particular generation. So, you could have a detectable block of DNA from an ancestor 10 generations back, but you have detectable blocks of DNA from only about 10% of those 10th generation ancestors." https://genealogy.stackexchange.com/questions/12701/how-many... and there's a good chart here about how much DNA you might share with various relatives: https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/autosomal-ancestry/unive...

I was having the same issue. I eventually deleted my entire tree because entire branches were not being seen within the ThruLines....After I rebuilt a good chunk of it...absolutely nothing shows up in the ThruLines any longer, just a page telling me to reload the page or come back later. I've contacted support about six times but all they keep doing is sending me various weblinks telling me to clear my cookies or try another browser.

How confident can I be that this is my birth dad based on numerous thrulines on his tree?

(Disclaimer: I know nothing is definitive through Ancestry.com. It is merely curiosity and interest as I get older and start to wonder about my ancestry)

I know my birth mom, and she knows my father was one of two men. I have found them both on Ancestry (definitely 100% the correct men), and one of them has "thrulines" all the way throughout their side of the tree, just like my birth mom's tree has. The other man has no thrulines at all, though I made his after the other man's.

I also made a family tree for my adoptive family (this one was made years before my birth "parent's"), and there is not a single thruline on the entire tree. This makes me think that the man with the thrulines is more likely to be my father...is that correct? I know it's not "truelines," but my question is how likely is it that a man who has 50/50 odds of being my father would be the one with all of the thrulines? Or is it possible that Ancestry just decided that that man was my "father" because I spent more time on his tree than any of the others?

I just find the "thrulines" algorithm to be confusing. Are they or are they not based on DNA matches at least at SOME point? Or can they all be based on guesses alone? My birth mom does NOT have my possible birth father anywhere in her personal tree either, so I know any guesses would not be based on her tree. The part I get hung up on is when I click on any DNA matches related to my birth mom, I can actually see people in their trees that match with mine. I have yet to find a person who matches anything on my "dad's" side. Though, I have only gotten through the first few pages...
Re: Grandfather disappeared on thrulines

It sounds like the same thing that is happening to a lot of people. Someone from your tree that use to be on your thru lines page is no longer there, but instead is just the blank figure of a man or woman marked "Private." If that is the case, it was probably caused by someone recently taking a DNA test and linking it to a private tree that contains the disappearing person. All it takes is one person with a private tree to do this. I have brought it to the attention of Ancestry and they said they would look into it. If this is not fixed, the usefulness of thru lines will erode over time as more people link private trees. If people want their trees to be private, fine but that shouldn't spoil the usefulness of thru line for the rest of us.
