I found this record in the 1930 census for Newark, New Jersey.

Janet Edward, wife, age 55, born about 1875 in Scotland, age at first marriage – 45, immigrated 1902, naturalized.

If the George Sutherland in the 1930 census and the 1940 census are the same guy we can assume George married Hannah Rachel Stewart in New Jersey. The New Jersey Archives in Trenton should have the marriage certificate on microfilm.
Who was George’s first wife and where did she die. If you are able to locate an immigration record for George you should see who traveled with him. If his first wife came to New Jersey the state archives should have a death record.
The Social Security Death Index has an interesting entry.
George Sutherland, born 15 April 1903, died August 1986 in Union, New Jersey.
You can send for George’s social security application which will have the names of his parents. It will cost $27.00.
