It's been awhile since my original post. I finally just went back to using my tree on Once they added the "merge individuals" feature it made it much easier to clean up my trees.

Frankly, the GEDCOM standard is so outdated it is amazing that any genealogy program today continues to bind itself to it. I was on computers back in the days when the GEDCOM standard was released. Having 64k of computing capacity was a big deal for the home user. A single megabyte of storage was over $200. So genealogy software today tries to dumb down the output level so a database can be converted to a text file based on standards set in the dinosaur era of computer programming. And yet everyone continues to ask for software that will transfer their data in GEDCOM format. Really why bother? You lose so much data in a GEDCOM transfer that it isn't worth the effort.

I would much prefer seeing some innovative programmer who understands genealogy develop software that sets the new standard. If they do it well, other programs will be forced to shift to the new standard just to maintain market share and create an output file to meet the new standard.

I have actually thought of using OneNote for my family tree. The links and keyword features make it a much better choice and I can format the pages the way that fits my needs. If I want to share it with someone, I can just send them the file. It's not a database, but with the keyword search and link features today, is a database really even necessary?
