“I agree that it would be nice if the software community (vendors and users) would develope a "best practices" document, and if not for everyone at least for this product.”

I agree with this comment.

I would go further and state, that for the product FTM 2012/2013/etc the “best practices” document should be the RESPONSIBILITY of

They are the one’s who developed this product and they should be the one’s who know the best way (practice) to use it and hence they should be the ones responsible** for developing the “best practice.”

In many cases the questions that come to this forum are of the type of “How should I do this?”, “What is the best way to do this?” How do other users do this ?”, etc. [users are essentially asking what is the best practice for doing this]

Not to take away any of the help that other users* are providing to help answer these questions, but the best help to answer these questions should come from the developers – they are the ones who know what they had in mind when they wrote the software and they should have the best knowledge on how to use it .

*In fact, in some cases the help being provided by other users are really work-arounds to overcome the deficiencies of the software and/or the lack of “best practices” published by the developers. And this help being provided by other users takes the responsibility away from and in a sense give the responsibility for the best way to do things in FTM 2012 to the users themselves

In a perfect world FTM users should not have to come to this forum to find out how they should do things ---they should be able to go to the “Best Practices” document/computer file published by

** This does not mean that the users should be left out of the equation. They should have input into the development of a “best practices” document and where the “best practices” are deficient they should be providing input to the people responsible for the “best practice” –

So bottom line:

1-A best practices document would be very beneficial
2-It should be the RESPONSIBILITY of
3-Input into the development of the best practice should come from the users
4-Deficiencies in the system/best practices should be pointed out by the users

When you look at the above 4 items you could say “Isn’t that what is happening today”
The answer to that is NO
USERS HAVE TAKEN/ASSUMED the responsibility of determining what the best practice is (and this forum is replete with many many examples of this).

This responsibility should be forced back to the Development Group and one way to help do this is to 1) request that the developers develop a best practice for their product and 2) when questions come to this forum on the “Best” way to do something they should be submitted to the development group
