I just purchased Family Tree Maker 2014 with the objective of converting my data from The Master Genealogist (TMG) in order to upload a database to Ancestry.com. I have 19,412 individuals in my database with 2,800 linked exhibits in both jpeg & pdf format and 621,214 citations from 1,555 sources.
I did two imports: the first was done as an import directly from my TMG data files. This import only reported 3 minor errors and listed 18,494 individuals (918 persons missing) with 1,047 multimedia and 1,248 sources. Initially looked like good data with individual photographs linked in the tree display; however, I then looked for ancestor linkages to assess correctness and consistency. Terrible problems such as: MANY ancestor lines corrupted with incomplete data; individual born 1651 died 1731 has parent born 1832 died 1914; individual born 1512 died 1570 has father of completely different surname born 1648 died 1700. A disaster.
I then exported a GEDCOM file from TMG and imported from this GEDCOM file. This import reported a few dozen errors but listed 19,411 individuals, 2,221 multimedia, and 13,525 sources. While there were no individual photographs linked in the tree display, multimedia files did appear to be correctly linked to individuals. I then checked all of the problem areas with missing and totally implausible ancestors seen in the first import and didn’t see any evidence of similar problems. MOST individual event tags are missing and MANY of the source citations are not properly linked to individual events; however, at least it appears that familial linkages are preserved.
Does anyone have experience with TMG to FTM conversions and recommended approaches to ensure the most correct and complete conversion possible?
