There's no doubt in my mind that Joseph Putnam should be held in high regard for opposing his own family members regarding the trials. However, please don't think that he was the only enlightened person in the Salem area. Community members wrote petitions in support of victims and spoke out when they could. There were people who defended Goody Glover 4 years earlier when she was executed in Boston as a witch for enchanting the Godwin children. The people who spoke out may have still believed in God and the enchantments of Satan, but they could plainly see that this was not what was happening in these cases.
