Obviously Ellen was under age, and had fallen out with her father. Do you know anything about her parents?
If the marriage had been planned in a church, you could try and find the church record to see how it was worded there.
I imagine that it might have reached the local newspaper if the family was important enough and it created a scandal.
I came across something like it recently, looking up an 1861 marriage in Manchester Cathedral. All details there, and the remark: "Not married, the man having been published in the name of Ireland instead of Burton".
