Hi guys, I'm having a hard time understanding what the following marks before/after the word 'English' means in certain census records. Specifically, my ancestor George Douglass listed his father as being born in England in multiple records, but in this one, the census taker wrote a small abbreviated word before the word 'English':

Here's another example; my great-great grandmother Isabella J. Conway was born in Ireland, but listed her & her parent's birthplace as 'Scot-English' (again the Circle mark is there)- Why would she identify her & her parent's birthplace as 'Scot-English', if she was born in Ireland?

Could someone please tell me what this means?
