Between 1850 and 1923 (the year U.S. immigrations quotas began) more than 50% of the population left the Azores. Including almost all the Jews. The main reason for this was economic strife (and increasing antisemitism for the Jews). The Azores were a major resupply point between the old world and the new, but the clipper ship and the steam ship made continent to continent travel more practical. Anyway, most emigrants went to these locations; New Bedford, Boston, San Francisco (Hayward in the east bay and central valley towns like Gustine and Merced), Seattle, Honolulu, and New Zealand. Gustine, CA would be an especially good place to start searching. Also, many of the Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism (called conversos), but a significant number converted back after emigration. Many conversos also choose to immigrate to Amsterdam where they joined an already thriving Portuguese/Azorean Sephardic community there. So if I were looking for other relatives those would be the places I would start. Also, sadly check Yad Vashim for Holland records. That community in Holland was decimated by the Nazi's during the Holocaust, but you can often find records and testimonials to individuals and families who perished that list both family connections and places of origin. Hope this info gives you a few new leads.
