I have heard about Carmel, New Jersey over the years from various relatives, although everyone from my family left that area long ago. My great-grandfather, Moses Kauffmann, and his wife, Liesl Nicolefsky, came to America from Odessa, Russia and had a farm near Carmel. They had three children before Liesl died in the flu epimedic of 1918. Moses later moved to California and owned a tomato farm in the Del Mar area, near San Diego. I knew him in California in the 1950's, when I was a very young child and he was a very old man. I remember that he gave me a silver dollar and he poured ketchup over all the food on his dinner plate. Decades earlier, in the 1920's, Moses' son Harry married a girl from the Carmel area named Sarah Fisher. Probably Harry and Sarah met while growing up on nearby farms. Sarah had three sisters and a brother. Sarah's father, Jacob Fisher, was a tailor of men's formal clothing in Philadelphia before he bought his chicken farm near Carmel. Harry Kauffman and Sarah Fisher had one child, and they are my grandparents. They both died before I was born. Sarah was politically very liberal, and I believe that was a characteristic of the Carmel colony.
