Mrs. Gonzales; 74, Dies, Crete Native
Elmwood, Neb - Mrs. John Gonzales, 74, at her farm home near here.

She was born Nellie Rhine at Crete and taught school there several years prior to 1900. At the turn of the century she moved to Lincoln, where she taught in Whittier school for two years.

She has lived here since her marriage in 1913.

Survivors are her husband, a son Clark of Elmwood, daughters Carolyn Deems and Mrs. Rex Hill both of Los Angeles, several grandchildren and sisters, Mrs. Ed Shepard of Crete and Miss Estalla Rhine of Lincoln.
Nellie Rhine married John E. (C?.) Deems about 1900, they had a daughter Caroline. I think they were divorced before or about 1910. Nellie is found living with her mother Mrs. James W. Rhine in Lincoln on the 1910 census and Carolyn is 5 years old. Nellie subsequently married John P. Gonzales and had a daughter Janice. Janice married Rex Hill per her mother's obit. Clark Gonzales was the son of John Gonzales and his first wife - I do not know the 1st wife's name.

John Deems' parents were Jacob Jennings Deems and Louisa Arnold. The Deems family were pioneers of Saline County. I am a descendant of John Deems' sister, Deborah Anna Deems, who married I. Ora Townsend.

I have a great deal of information on these families and would be very happy to share the information I have.

I would like to know if anyone has any information on either of Nellie's marriages, and information about her daughter Carolyn Deems.

Thanks for any help.
