Sorry I'm new to this so I hope I'm in the right place.
An ancestor of mine, Henry Carter, was listed as a "Blackman labourer" on the 1851 Census. He lived in Liverpool, UK at the time. Was this a specific occupation - maybe linked to blacksmithing - or was this how they recorded people of colour? I've tried googling but I am only finding people with the surname Blackman.
Thank you for your help
