Surnames: Coonville Mine in Hocking Co. OH.;Wooten
Hi! My name is Karen Conner and I am looking for any information(that exist written down and picture that can be copied) of this mine and the places where the workers lived.I can't find anything at the hocking or nelsonville libraries on it.
My brother-in-law's dad worked there in about 1931-1935. Mybrother-in-law says that where they lived was called"the ten spot",because ten houses met at an angle there and there was a well at the junction. He says that a man named Sam Carrick(karrick) either ran the mine or the company store. He said that there was also an area where all the houses were painted black(or were covered in tarpaper) and the adults there called it(Ihate using this term)"nigger town".
There is nothing left there today(at least as far as I can see).
I'd like to find some info that I can copy and give to him,he's
80 years old and I'm afraid my time is getting short. also I'm
looking for his grandparent's last resting places;their names were Thomas and Julia Fields Wooten.
If anyone can help me I'd sure appreciate it.
Karen Conner
